One of the most dramatically beautiful landscapes on Earth - over 1,000 kilometres of glacier-carved channels, forested islands and ancient forest descending straight to the waterline, navigated by ships that barely register on most world maps.

Condors soar above the granite spires of Torres del Paine. Pumas stalk the Patagonian steppe, rarely seen but unmistakably present. Peale's dolphins ride the bow wave of expedition ships threading channels so narrow and remote that many carry no name on standard charts. This is Patagonia by small ship - a version of the region almost no land-based itinerary can reach.
The scale is genuinely difficult to grasp: the Chilean fjord system runs over 1,000 kilometres from Puerto Montt down toward Cape Horn, glacier after glacier calving into water so still it mirrors the peaks above it.
Patagonia sits outside the standard expedition circuit, so availability varies by season and operator.
AE Expeditions' broader Americas programme includes Patagonian sailings - Rich keeps track of which departures run in a given year and can flag other operators as their schedules confirm.
Some voyages do link the two, typically departing from or returning via Ushuaia or Punta Arenas - worth asking about if you're planning a longer South American trip.
Many of the most dramatic glacier fronts and channels have no road access at all - a ship is the only way to reach them, and a small one is the only way to do so at close quarters.
Independent advice on one of expedition cruising's genuinely under-the-radar routes.
