Australia's Last Frontier

Rock Art Older Than The Pyramids

The Kimberley coastline is accessible only by small expedition ship, and what it reveals rewards the effort: Aboriginal rock art galleries tens of thousands of years old, the spectacular horizontal waterfalls where immense tides force water sideways through narrow gorges, and freshwater swimming holes tucked behind red ochre cliffs.

Tidal ranges here are among the most extreme on Earth, which is precisely what creates the horizontal falls phenomenon - a detail that makes the Kimberley feel less like a beach destination and more like a genuinely geological one.

Kimberley Questions

Before You Book

Why does the Kimberley season run opposite to Antarctica's?

It falls in the Southern Hemisphere's dry season (May-September), avoiding the tropical wet season's monsoon rains and giving the most reliable conditions for the horizontal falls and gorge excursions.

Is this trip physically demanding?

Some excursions involve gorge walks and swims to reach waterholes, but operators grade activity levels clearly and there is always a gentler option alongside the more active ones.
