Galápagos Islands

Where Darwin's theory of evolution took shape, and wildlife that has never learned to fear humans coexists in complete wilderness - one of the few destinations on Earth where the size of your ship genuinely determines what you get to see.

Evolution In Plain Sight

Why Ship Size Matters More Here Than Anywhere

Marine iguanas bask on volcanic rock a few feet from the path. Giant tortoises amble across open ground, entirely unbothered. Blue-footed boobies perform their courtship dance in the open, and flightless cormorants dry outstretched wings that no longer serve any purpose. None of it is staged, and none of it requires you to hide - the Galápagos' isolation means its wildlife simply never evolved a fear of people.

Only small expedition ships are permitted to access the outer islands, where the most extraordinary encounters take place - a hard limit set by Ecuadorian park authorities rather than a marketing distinction, which makes the choice of ship size a genuinely practical decision rather than a style preference.

Choosing Your Operator

Who Sails The Galápagos

Three operators Rich works with run dedicated Galápagos itineraries, including two ships built specifically for these islands.

Lindblad pioneered small-ship Galápagos cruising back in 1967 and still leads on naturalist depth; HX's Santa Cruz II and Silversea's dedicated Silver Origin are both purpose-built for these waters specifically.

Galápagos Questions

Before You Book

Is the Galápagos suitable for families?

Very much so - the wildlife's total lack of fear makes close encounters easy and safe for children, and most operators offer excellent snorkelling with sea lions as a highlight for younger travellers.

Do I need to fly to reach the islands?

Yes - you'll fly from mainland Ecuador (usually Guayaquil or Quito) to Baltra or San Cristóbal to join your ship. Rich can arrange the full journey, flights included.
